Decking Need a Revamp? Here’s Some DIY Tricks
To attain traction and durability, swimming pool decks are usually created from concrete with a textured surface. Swimming pool decks; however, are not resistance to damage, and chips and cracks may at times appear in the concrete. Below are decking DIY tricks that you can apply at your pool.
Prepare the Area
Clear any movable items or furniture out of the area. Tape huge sheets of bubble wrap to your pool’s inside edge to keep the swimming pool free from debris and clean.
Shot-Blast the Swimming Pool Deck
You can use a scarifier or a shot blaster to sand or clean damaged or old concrete swimming pool decks. A powerful power washer can tackle the job if the deck is slightly damaged.
This may be a very dirty job, so ensure you put on masks and clothe yourself well. Work your way around the whole deck area using the machines.
Fix Any Cracks
In case you have huge cracks to fill; you may hire an expert who can use a concrete wet saw to cut around any huge cracks, which require filling.
Use wet concrete patch to fill all cracks, smooth the surface using a concrete float and level it with the surrounding concrete. If a huge crack goes to the edge of the concrete, you might need to create a form to hold the concrete and the gravel before filling the crack.
Pressure-Wash the Surface
You can pressure-wash the whole deck surface as soon as all of the concrete patches are dry. This will clean up any particles or dirt left behind by the shot-blaster and prepare the pool deck for the new surface. Make sure you put on safety glasses when you use the pressure washer.
Mask Off the Decking Area
Use heavy-duty tape and plastic sheeting to mask off any areas which should not get the new concrete surface.
Spray On Micro-Topping
Except if you feel confident that you can handle the next phase of decking by yourself, you can hire an expert to use a power sprayer to apply concrete micro-topping material to the whole deck. Micro-topping is a cement-based product, which gives a uniform color and texture to the surface. Its uniform use may be difficult to attain without having areas with too little or too much micro-topping.
Allow the new surface to dry overnight; you should not walk on the surface for 12 hours while it cures. Look at the manufacturer’s directions for specific curing and drying times.
Spray Color Stain on Coping
With a decking expert select the textures and colors you would like for the finish coat.
If you have a swimming pool, the coping will get a different color compared to the rest of the swimming pool deck. With an expert concrete finisher, mask off the deck and use an acid concrete stain to spray the coping in the desired color. Test the color by spraying it on a small, unnoticeable area of concrete before spraying the whole coping. Allow the stain to dry based on the manufacturer’s directions, often overnight.
Stain the Swimming Pool Deck
As soon as the stain is dry on the coping; hire an expert to mask off the coping. After that, spray acidic concrete stain (of a different shade) on the swimming pool deck. Apply the shade uniformly and spray the whole deck in one session to keep the color even. Allow the area to dry overnight before taking out the masking.
