Different Types of Swimming Pools

To know which inground pool lasts the longest, you have to get familiar with all the different types. The most common types of swimming pools are Fiberglass, Gunite and Vinyl.

Fiberglass — pools made of fiberglass are shells that are made offsite in a factory. They typically last up to 25 years or more.

Gunite — Gunite pools are concrete pools. Steel bars are laid down first to support the concrete, then it is all topped off with a plaster coating. These pools can last up to 10 years before they need to be resurfaced.

Vinyl — A vinyl pool is made the same way fiberglass pools are. They start with a metal or plastic paneling, then add coping with the vinyl liner sitting on top of it all. These swimming pools last only 6-12 years.

Why Do Gunite Pools need to be Resurfaced?

Plaster is laid over top the gunite. After many years of circulating water, people jumping in and out of the pool, the plaster can begin to wear out. When you start to see the gunite come through the plaster, this means it’s time to resurface your swimming pool. Another indication that your pool needs resurfacing is if you find a leak. You’ll know if you have a leak because you’ll notice the water slowly start to drain. It’s an easy fix if caught early enough.

Resurfacing shouldn’t take too much time. Typically, it takes 2-3 weeks to resurface a swimming pool.

Which Type of Pool is the Best Quality?

A lot of it depends on your budget. If you’re looking for your swimming pool to be installed quickly, you’ll want a vinyl liner. For a more exquisite swimming pool design, gunite is the way to go. There are a lot more design options when you choose the gunite swimming pool.

Fiberglass is good if you and your family are looking to turn your backyard into an oasis. These types of swimming pools are the most sturdy, which means you won’t need a remodel for decades.
