Why Should You Clean Your Pool?
Keeping up to date on pool service is a necessity in order for everyone to enjoy. Cleaning the pool can help protect your equipment, prevent bacteria, prolong it’s life, and is a must when ensuring your comfort. With your pool staying properly maintained, you can also hold off on repairs for an extended amount of time if needed. Gunite pool services don’t require too much attention and can easily be maintained using the proper supplies and basic instructions.
Before You Begin
Make sure all items are removed from the pool, especially the smaller toys so they don’t get sucked into the underwater pool vacuum cleaner. A pool brush can be used to brush off any dirt or algae from the walls of the swimming pool. Brushing should be done from top to bottom, starting at the very top tile line and working your way down to the bottom. The surface of the pool should always be tended to as well by using a rake net. The rake net can be used to scoop all unwanted items out of the pool such as leaves, sticks, or grass, and can be a very handy tool when it comes to pool service. This process should be completed every day or every other day to ensure your pool’s health.
If you feel your gunite pool needs a deep cleanse, then you need to drain the water out. If you backwash the filters and reverse the filters, they can help get rid of any dirt or sediment that might choke the water drainage. Once you open the drain valve of the pool, empty it to about 1/4th of the pool’s capacity. A mixture of muriatic acid and water is recommended for this stage of pool service. Baking soda and water can be used effectively as well, but the muriatic acid has a higher rate of dissolving tougher stains and residues.
Once you have the mixture ready and the pool drained to its specific level, you must use a tumbler to sprinkle the cleaning mix throughout the pool, and let it sit for about 15 minutes. After leaving it unattended, rinse the sides with a garden hose and continue brushing off the stains until it has all dissolved.
Filling the Pool Back Up
After completing the deep cleaning of your pool, filling it up is easy, yet time consuming. Make sure you have flipped your filters back to their original sides and that you have cleaned them, close the drain valve, and use a garden hose. Just point the garden hose into the pool and turn the valve on and let the water slowly fill back up.
If your home has multiple hose bibs, then use a second or even a third hose if you have one. These will help the process of filling your pool back up without taking any excess pressure away from the other hose. Also, using a hose that is 5/8″ in diameter can help speed things up a bit, too. Once you have completed filling the pool back up, you can return to your previous chlorine additives and chemicals to keep the pool healthy.
