Where Did the Name Come From?

Greek & Roman emperors kept gorgeous fish pools and called them “piscine”, meaning fish in the Latin language. Now we call it pool in English, but the word for pool in Spanish is “piscina.”

Around 5,000 years ago we find the first known pool. This “great bath” in Pakistan measures 39 feet long, 23 feet wide and 8 feet deep. The thin brick construction had gypsum plaster and a thick layer of tar to help retain its water.

Romans and Greeks on the other hand used the pool for different things. The wealthy among them thought of it as a status symbol and it was an essential element of society. This is when they began to be used for social events as well as bathing.

Training soldiers was another use of the pools and swimming was a part of education for Plato. There were even add-on accessories for the pool that were invented around 8 B.C. by building waterfalls and gardens to overlook Rome.

As pool history continued, swimming became a sport that was embraced in the UK and elsewhere. It allowed for showing off and competition as well as recreation. On from there, it become more and more accepted as a recreational activity and now we almost only use it for recreation and exercise.

Swimming pools have gone from being simple holes in the ground to ornately designed pool areas that can take up full backyards where you will be able to entertain over a hundred guests. Depending on what you want out of the swimming pool, you will be able to create your pool dream and design it without a lot of hassle. Having a swimming pool these days is almost a right and most upscale homes have them.
