Treat Your Pool Cover RightWhen it comes time for you to take off your pool cover don’t just throw it off hastily and then forget about it. First, you should clean off the leaves, water, and other debris that has collected on top of it. Sharp tools can potentially damage your pool cover, so proper tools like a skimmer net or soft broom are ideal of cleaning off leaves, etc. Likewise, a pool cover pump can be used to remove the built up water. Your local New Orleans pool store should carry these cleaning tools. One that take care of, now you can actually carefully take off the cover. If there is still debris on the pool cover, make sure that it doesn’t fall into your pool. Clean your pool cover, ideally with specialized pool cover cleaner, then securely store it for next winter.
Water And PumpsIt is expected that you will need to add extra water to you pool so that it is back up to its usual level. Once you’ve topped off your pool you can then get out your brushes and vacuum and start cleaning it out. Take your time doing this, the last thing that you want to do is rush and ‘miss a spot’. Reconnect your pump and filter system and give it a test drive. Replace broken pieces and clean out the entire thing. Make sure that you check for problems that can be easily overlooked, such as drips, faulty connections, and leaks. It is ideal that you address these issues before you actually open your pool.
Chemicals, Chemicals, ChemicalsThis is the part that a lot of New Orleans pool owners are afraid of. Checking the pH, calcium hardness, and the alkalinity levels of your pool can seem like a daunting task; however, it actually isn’t that difficult. Once you are finished checking then you will need to add the proper chemicals, acid or base, to regulate the levels. The general consensus is that pH levels should be within 7.2 to 7.4 pH while alkalinity levels should be within 80 to 120 ppm. For chlorine, a level of 1 to 3 ppm is recommended.
