pHThis is a common term that any swimming pool owner, old or new, will have heard being thrown around in pool related conversations. The pH in your swimming pool can fluctuate when almost anything goes into the water. People and rainwater are probably two of the most common things that cause variations in the pH of your pool water. It is therefore recommended that you keep an adequate amount of pH increaser and pH decreaser readily available. On average, most pool owners in Ontario use less pH decreaser than pH increaser. If the pH of your pool’s water is low then that means that it is acidic. Likewise, if the pH of your pool’s water is high then that means that it is basic. Recommended pH Level: 7.4 – 7.6
AlkalinityRemember how we said that almost anything that enters the water can affect the pH of your pool? This is where alkalinity comes into play. Alkaline substances are used to regulate pH fluctuations by absorbing changes to your pool’s water before these changes can alter the pH. This is why it is also important that you try to keep an adequate amount of alkalinity increaser readily available Recommended Alkalinity Level: 100 – 150 ppm
Chlorine And BromineChlorine is a popular pool servicing chemical that a lot of pool owners will have at least heard of in passing. Chlorine is a useful and cost effective killer of waterborne bacteria and algae. It can be added to your pool’s water in a few ways, the most popular method being simple chlorine tablets. These tablets can be added to your pool’s skimmer basket or a floating chlorine dispenser. Aside from tablets, other methods include powdered chlorine or a salt chlorine generator. An alternative to chlorine is bromine. Bromine is commonly used in indoor pools and spas because it has a less obtrusive odor compared to chlorine. Bromine is not effective in outdoor pools because sunlight breaks it down quickly. Recommended Chlorine Level: 3 ppm Recommended Bromine Level: 3 – 5 ppm
Calcium HardnessCalcium doesn’t really affect the chemistry of your water in any direct way; however, it is still important. If your pool’s water lacks calcium then it will seek it out elsewhere, most likely eating away at your pool’s plaster. Recommended Calcium Hardness Level: 200 – 275 ppm
