Spring is in the air! Days are warming up, and you’re probably thinking about opening your pool for your family and friends. Hopefully, you followed our instructions on how to close your pool before winter, and this will be a breeze!
You can, of course, hire someone to open your pool for you. But you can save money by doing it yourself! Here is a step by step for you to utilize to get your pool ready for swimmers:
Steps for Opening Your Pool:
Drain and clean cover. Before you remove the cover, drain as much water as possible and remove debris.
Remove the pool cover. Two people should remove the cover. Hopefully, you removed most of the debris, but some will get into the pool. Don’t worry too much about that. Clean and store it (make sure to not leave it on your lawn as it will kill the grass).
Fill er’ up! Use a hose to raise the water level back to normal. Usually, this is about the middle of the skimmer opening.
Remove winterizing plugs. Remove the winterizing plugs from the skimmer and return lines.
Turn on equipment. Start turning on your pool equipment, which includes priming the pump and turning on the circulation and filtration system. Make sure the air relief valve is open if you have one, to bleed the air from the system.
Chemistry test. After letting the circulation system run for a few hours, use a test kit to check the pH, total alkalinity, and chlorine. Ideal levels are:
pH – 7.4 to 7.6
Total Alkalinity – 80 to 120 ppm
Chlorine – 2.0 to 4.0 ppm
Calcium hardness – above 150 ppm
Clean it up. Thoroughly brush and vacuum your pool.
Filter. Running your filtration system overnight will filter out all the dirt, algae, and bacteria left behind.
Shock your pool. Shocking the pool will eliminate nearly all of the remaining bacteria and contaminants in your water.
Finishing touches. Add algaecide and monitor pool every week for chlorine use, pH and clarity.
