How Shocking your Pool Works

Before shocking your swimming pool, it is best to understand how it will help your swimming pool become clean again. Free chlorine is what is most desired during the shocking process. We want a lot of free chlorine because that means it hasn’t been contaminated and it will help keep your pool clean if contaminates do get into your pool. Combined chlorine means that the free chlorine fought of a contaminate and is now combined, which is what we want to get rid of by adding more chlorine. Total chlorine means that there is an equal share of both free and combined chlorine.

How to Shock your Pool Properly

Learning how to shock your pool isn’t a difficult task. In fact, shocking your swimming pool can be fairly easy. There are only a few steps prior to shocking your swimming pool. First, you’ll want to make sure to skim your pool of any floating debris and vacuum the dirt that may be on the bottom. Once your swimming pool is looking a little cleaner, then you can add the shock to your pool. Typically you’ll want to add 1 packet of shock per 10,000 gallons of water that is in your pool. Also, make sure that your swimming pool pump is on that way the shock can be distributed evenly across the pool.

After you have dumped the shock into the swimming pool leave your pool pump on for 8-10 hours. The next day you’ll want to test your pool water to see if it is properly balanced. If your swimming pool is still cloudy or green then you will have to shock it again and keep your swimming pool pump running until it is back to its crystal clear form.
