Planning Your Pool Deck

Since your pool deck is going to be a big part of your outdoor space, you need to make sure to properly plan it. With proper planning, you will be able to enjoy your pool without worrying about your deck function. Whether you plan your pool deck before or after you put your pool in place, there are things to think about that can make life easier for you once your pool deck is in place.

Design Considerations

How do you plan on using your pool deck? Is it going to be used as a patio or is it more of a place to outline the pool and give it a little differentiation? The answer to this question is going to determine greatly how big of a pool you are going to need. You should think about the furniture you are going to be putting on the deck. You do not want it to be too crowded so get a big enough pool deck to give you some space.

The elevation of your pool deck is another thing to think about. Where are you going to put the steps? Will there be multiple levels and areas? What about the retaining walls? How are they going to work into your design?

One of the less glamorous parts of your deck design is drainage. You need to ensure all pool drainage goes away from your pool and home. If it is difficult to grade your pool decking in your area, you should install drains that will move the excess rainwater where it should be going.

The surfaces around your pool should be nonslip and light colored. You do not want abrasive edges for your pool coping and you may find it helpful to inset borders to define your pool’s edge.
