What Is a Solar Cover for Your Pool?

A solar cover pulls double duty because it helps to keep your pool heated and it helps to keep debris out of your pool. You may be wondering if there is any other reason besides for computer that you want to keep a solar cover on to warm your pool. Yes, there is. Of course, you want to stay comfortable and have a nice warm pool whenever you get in to swim but you are also going to save energy when you have a solar cover warming your pool. Instead of having to have your heater on in the pool, it is already warm.

Another point of why you are going to want a solar cover is because having a solar cover keep your pool from evaporating. In some places, you can actually lose 4-6 foot of water each year because of evaporation.

How to Use Your Solar Cover Properly

Now that you want a solar cover, how do you use it properly? You want to make the solar cover work for you instead of being an annoyance and there are ways that you can make sure that your solar cover is a good thing instead of a bother.

When you get your solar cover, you need to spread it over the top of your pool water. It is going to look like a big piece of bubble wrap, but you need to make sure that you do not pop it. It is not bubble wrap. Put the bubble side down on your pool and spread it out over the entire pool surface. If you have a strangely shaped pool, you can always cut the extra off the sides so that it isn’t in your way.

Another thing to think about is getting a reel that you can wind your solar cover up on so you don’t have to pull it off your pool manually every time. If you don’t want to get a reel to put your solar cover on, you can always cut your solar cover into smaller pieces so that it makes it easier for you to remove it. Pulling off smaller pieces of the solar cover is going to be a lot easier than trying to manage a single piece that is on your pool but getting a reel to put it on is even easier. You can get one with wheels so you can roll it away or you can choose to have it mounted on your pool.

Once swimming season is over you are going to need to roll this solar cover up and put the safety cover on. Make sure you get all of the water off of it before storage so there won’t be any mold.
