Pollen is going to happen and as pool owners, you are going to have to take steps to get the pollen out of the pool. This is especially true when it is a time of heavier pollen such as during the spring and summer months. The good news is that getting rid of the annoyance of pollen is pretty easy and isn’t going to take a great deal of time. You can follow the steps below and get rid of the pollen in your pool.
When Pollen Is Heaviest
As a pool owner, you should know when pollen is at its heaviest. This knowledge will help you prepare your pool care routine so you can keep from having to deal with the problem on the defensive and you can get on the offensive. Watch pollen counts closely and when they rise, it is time for you to do some extra work to make the pool clean and clear.
Is It Pollen or Algae?
Before you begin to clean your pool, you need to ensure that you are dealing with pollen and not algae. Some types of algae look a great deal like pollen. Yellow mustard algae have a light yellowish/green pollen look. You will be able to tell if it is algae or pollen by where it is collected.
Pollen will float on top of the pool but algae often stick to the side or bottom of the pool and won’t be easy to filter through your pool system. If you see yellow floating on your pool or if you see yellow in your filter, you most likely are dealing with pollen.

While removing pollen isn’t difficult, you are going to have to do it regularly when pollen is running rampant. Here are the steps you need to take to get rid of pollen.
#1 – Run Your Filtration System
Running your filtration system is going to be your best bet when you want to defend against the invasion of pollen. While it may not be the only thing you need, you should run your pool filtration system as much as possible. It is going to cost you more money in energy but it will keep you from being overrun with pollen.
#2 – Skim the Water Regularly
#3 – Aluminum Sulfate
Some of the pollen in your pool can’t be seen because it is too small. It will even pass through your filtration system so to get rid of this pollen you’ll need to add aluminum sulfate to your water. This will bind with the pollen so it clumps together and your filter can get it.
#4 – Shock the Pool
