Pool Shapes and Designs
If you’ve decided to build the in-ground pool of your dreams, you’ll have a lot of decisions to make! One of the very first will be regarding pool shapes and designs.
There are three standard pool shapes and designs for you to ponder.
First is the freeform pool. Your pool design doesn’t have to be a rectangle. Commonly, freeform pools tend to be kidney shape, but you are only limited to your imagination. While fiberglass swimming pools have predetermined shapes and designs, if you’re building a gunite pool, the sky’s the limit.

If your preferences for pool shapes and designs lean toward traditional, consider a geometric pool design. Traditional pool shapes offer a clean, simplistic design. Generally, your shape is going to be a square or rectangle.

Another popular choice is roman, also known as, classic style. This is similar to the geometric except it has corners that curve inward. It’s a little change that really adds emphasis to the pool design. This is the style that never really goes out of fashion and can add elegance to your outdoor area.

There are some pluses and minuses to all pool shapes and designs. If your backyard area is a small square space, then the geometric pool might be ideal, so you can maximize pool size for the area you have available. In a similar situation, if your backyard is small with an unusual radius, then the freeform pool could give work perfectly.
If you choose to do a lot of landscaping in your backyard, the geometric or classic style might be preferred because it’s not a showy style. It won’t distract from wood, stone, and gardening elements that you might be adding around it.
If you want your pool to be the star of your backyard, go for that freeform shape and show off your unique pool design.
