Is it bad if my pool smells strongly of chlorine?

Your pool should not smell like chlorine. If it does, that means there is a high amount of “chloramines” – compounds of chlorine and ammonia. These compounds are somewhat toxic and can cause mild to severe eye and skin irritation.

As these chemicals do not evaporate, it is advised to add shock to the pool by adding more chlorine. By doing so, the process breaks the chemical bonds between chlorine and ammonia, and you can get rid of the chlorine smell.
